PSYCHOLOGICAL REHABILITATION (DOHSA-HOU)

In 2007, Seri Mengasih Centre was introduced to this method by Dr Surender Kumar, a clinical psychologist & professor at Chikushi Jogakuen University, Fukuoka, Japan.

A subsequent introductory seminar cum workshop followed by a study visit to Fukuoka, the birth place of this method, lead us to adopt it as one of our training programmes.

In 2008, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Chikushi Jogakuen University with Seri Mengasih Centre for the implementation of this method in our centre.

Seri Mengasih became the first centre in Sabah to include Dohsa-Hou as one if its therapy programmes.

Also, in the past decade since, Seri Mengasih has been the venue for Dohsa-Hou professionals (including Dr Surender) to come and conduct annual Dohsa-Hou training camps for carers and practitioners in the field of rehabilitation from around Sabah and beyond.

Through these training camps, a significant number of persons have received their psychological rehabilitation trainers certificates cum licenses from the Japanese Association of Psychological Rehabilitation, to practice the method in their own centres. This has benefitted many special needs trainees who are outside of Seri Mengasih Centre.

In 2017, two of Seri Mengasih’s own staff, Mr Osmund Jemior and Mr Evin Evon Ladai were the first in East Malaysia to be certified as Dohsa-Hou supervisors, and legible to conduct training the trainers workshops

It is to be noted that Dohsa Hou is not new to West Malaysia special education centres, but for East Malaysia, Seri Mengasih Centre is the first centre to include it as a training programme.

What is Dohsa-Hou?

Briefly, it is an effective rehabilitative program for individuals with motor disorders (such as those who are affected by cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, stroke and so on), and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as for those affected by emotional / mental health (for example trauma, and depression).

The founder is Dr Gosaku Naruse of Kyushu University, Fukuoka Japan in 1967.

The advantage of Dohsa-Hou is that no equipment of any kind is required, and is therefore suitable to be used in any setting, especially in remote villages where access to special training centres is difficult.

Basically, its underlying concept is that the psychological aspects of a person influence his/her physiological dysfunction. “Dohsa” means a holistic process of motor action consisting of the inner psychic activities of bodily movements & “Hou” means method.

The components in this training include (but is not limited to) relaxation and bodily movements.

Dohsa-Hou combines both the psychological & physical aspects of the trainee / patient.

It is different from other psychotherapeutic methods and physiotherapy. In traditional psychotherapeutic methods, the individual is helped in his/her motivation or striving, but no motor movement program is undertaken, whereas in physical therapy, the individual’s psychological aspects are not given due attention.
